A 21-year-old driver escaped serious injury after his SUV flipped over a barrier and became wedged between concrete beams above an interstate ramp in downtown Atlanta.
The crash happened around 11:23 p.m. Sunday as the driver was traveling on the I-20 East ramp from the I-75/I-85 Connector, according to an Atlanta police incident report.
Police said the driver was behind the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz GLC when he lost control while making a turn and struck a concrete median. The SUV then flipped over the median rail and off the bridge before becoming wedged between two concrete beams.
Video from the scene showed the driver’s legs and feet dangling toward the roadway below as debris was scattered across the road and people gathered at the scene.
The video quickly went viral on social media, with some people questioning whether the bizarre scene was real or AI-generated.
People who recorded the aftermath told local media that the driver appeared alert and was communicating with people below.
Atlanta Fire Rescue crews stabilized the SUV, and the driver was able to get out without assistance. Officials said no other vehicles were involved.
The driver was taken to Grady Hospital. Atlanta police said no critical injuries were reported.
A crane was later used to lift the SUV from between the beams before it was towed from the scene.
