DeKalb County Faces Massive $100 Million Fine Over Water Infrastructure Delays

DeKalb County’s aging water system faces serious setbacks, and the price tag could be steep. Officials have admitted they won’t meet a 2027 deadline to overhaul the county’s wastewater infrastructure, a delay that could result in penalties of up to $100 million.

The county had agreed to the repairs under a consent decree with federal and state regulators, aiming to fix failing sewer systems in south DeKalb. However, authorities have revealed that full compliance might not happen until 2037—ten years later than promised.

County leaders are considering a 10-percent annual water rate hike for the next decade to fund the overdue upgrades. The average monthly water bill could jump from around $70 to over $180 if approved by 2036.

Officials argue that the increase is necessary to maintain safe drinking water and avoid even more significant financial consequences.

Meanwhile, work has already begun on specific projects, including a 10-month sewer line repair along Caladium Drive. The county has also launched town hall forums to explain the situation’s urgency. DeKalb’s population has grown nearly nine times since the 1940s, so infrastructure demands have skyrocketed.

If you’re considering tying the knot, Atlanta might be the perfect place.

A new study by WalletHub ranks Atlanta as the fourth-best city in the U.S. for weddings in 2025, beating out nearly 180 other major cities. The study evaluated cities based on affordability, convenience, and wedding-related services. Atlanta ranked exceptionally high for its abundance of bridal shops, flower and gift stores, and event spaces.

The city placed fifth nationwide for venues per capita and sixth for bridal boutiques. It also scored well for the number of musicians, DJs, and photographers available. Only Orlando, Las Vegas, and Miami ranked higher, while Tampa secured fifth.

On the other end of the list, Pearl City, Hawaii, Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Warwick, Rhode Island, were rated the worst places to marry.

The study emphasized that with rising wedding costs, couples can benefit from cities where the ceremony and guest accommodations remain affordable. Towns with more wedding vendors also offer more competitive pricing and flexible scheduling, making planning easier.

A Jamaican national with a long history of violent crimes and illegal immigration has been arrested in Atlanta.

U.S. Marshals took Marcel Pierre Grant into custody on January 30, ending his latest run from the law. Grant, who has been deported multiple times, has racked up a staggering list of charges over the years, including armed robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated bank robbery, and illegal firearm possession.

In 2022, he was arrested again for unlawful re-entry into the U.S. and possession of methamphetamine. Despite this, he was released in 2024 under probationary monitoring, which he quickly violated. His failure to comply put him back on the U.S. Marshals’ radar, and they tracked him down without incident.

“Let the message go out to all criminals, both foreign and domestic,” said U.S. Marshal Thomas Brown. “If you do harm to the citizens of the United States, you will not be allowed a moment of peace.” Grant is currently being held and will face justice for his crimes.

The U.S. Marshals Service, known for hunting down fugitives nationwide, worked with the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force to make the arrest. “If you illegally come to our communities to wreak havoc, you will be caught, and you will answer for your crimes,” Brown added.

Fayette County deputies are saying farewell to one of their finest. K-9 Copper, a bloodhound with a nose for justice, is retiring after nearly a decade of dedicated service.

The sheriff’s office announced her retirement on February 7, marking the end of an impressive career that saw her respond to more than 150 calls.

Copper joined the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office in 2015, starting her training at just 12 weeks old. By seven months, she was already on the job, tracking down a wanted felon.

Over the years, she played a crucial role in cases ranging from homicides to armed robberies. But her most rewarding work was reuniting missing individuals with their loved ones.

“Her ability to provide hope and reunite families during critical moments was her most rewarding accomplishment,” the sheriff’s office stated. Beyond her crime-fighting skills, Copper was a local favorite, stealing hearts at community events and school visits.

She was a star at Harp’s Crossing Baptist Church’s Vacation Bible School and a beloved guest at elementary schools. Now, Copper gets to enjoy a well-earned retirement with her longtime handler, Lieutenant Thamert.
