Atlanta United is making waves with a blockbuster signing, securing striker Emmanuel Latte Lath from Middlesbrough FC. The club announced the deal Tuesday, confirming a four-year Designated Player contract running through 2028, with an option for 2029.

The transfer fee? A reported Major League Soccer-record $22 million plus add-ons, smashing the previous high set when FC Cincinnati landed Kévin Denkey for $16.2 million. The 26-year-old Ivory Coast international now becomes the centrepiece of Atlanta’s attacking rebuild.

“We’re excited to sign Latte Lath and look forward to welcoming him to the club and the city of Atlanta,” said Atlanta’s sporting director, Chris Henderson. “His pace and goal-scoring instincts will add another dimension to our attack,” he told the Atlanta United website.

Latte Lath made his mark at Middlesbrough, netting 29 goals in 67 appearances over the last two seasons. He finished fourth in the 2023-24 EFL Championship Golden Boot race, proving his ability at a high level. His journey has taken him through Italy, Switzerland, and England, accumulating 65 goals and 12 assists.

A crash involving several vehicles, including the deputy Sheriff’s office, stopped traffic on the Downtown Connector Tuesday afternoon, causing major delays. The Georgia State Patrol reported that a Chevrolet Silverado made an unsafe lane change, side-swiping a commercial vehicle.

The Silverado swerved across multiple lanes before slamming into a box truck, hitting its rear bumper. The impact caused the box truck to flip onto its side, blocking three right lanes of traffic.

The truck driver was rushed to the hospital with injuries. Around 4 p.m., a SKYFOX 5 aerial view captured the chaotic scene, showing the overturned truck and significant backups on the southbound I-75/85 lanes just before Langford Parkway.

Amid the crash, a Fulton County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was also spotted damaged, confirming that one of their deputies was involved in the accident. Authorities are still working to clear the scene, with traffic slowly recovering.

Rockdale County’s fire department is undergoing a leadership shake-up following the resignation of Fire Chief Marian McDaniel. County officials confirmed Tuesday that McDaniel stepped down last Thursday, prompting the appointment of Deputy Chief of Operations James Robinson as interim chief.

The reason behind McDaniel’s departure remains unclear, but county officials insist it is unrelated to the BioLab fire last September, which left a hazardous chemical plume lingering over metro Atlanta. The partial reopening of the facility has sparked frustration among activists, who have criticized local leaders for not shutting it down completely.

McDaniel made history when she became fire chief in December 2020, becoming the first woman and Black person to lead Rockdale County Fire Rescue. As the county searches for a permanent replacement, officials reassure residents that emergency services remain a top priority.

When the game is on the line, Trae Young delivers. With just 1.6 seconds left and the score tied at 130, the Hawks star pulled off a stunning 23-foot fadeaway to sink the Detroit Pistons and snap Atlanta’s brutal eight-game losing streak.

Despite dealing with right Achilles tendonitis, Young looked unstoppable. He dropped 34 points—17 in the fourth quarter—while dishing out nine assists and knocking down four threes.

His clutch stats this season are undeniable: most clutch points (106), most clutch assists (26), and the highest number of go-ahead shots in the final 10 seconds.

Yet, somehow, he didn’t make the All-Star team. The Hawks (23-27) continue to battle without Jalen Johnson, who is sidelined for the season. Dyson Daniels stepped up with a stat-stuffing performance, while De’Andre Hunter and rookie Zaccharie Risacher chipped in solid contributions. Atlanta will look to build momentum when they host Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs on Wednesday.

Another victim of last week’s devastating midair collision in Washington, D.C., has been identified, and he had deep ties to metro Atlanta.

Lt. Col. Brian Ellis, 53, was aboard American Airlines Flight 5342 when it crashed into an Army helicopter, killing 67 people. The Virginia resident was returning home from a business trip in Kansas.

More than 60 people were killed in the deadly collision.

Ellis was a 1989 graduate of Morrow High School in Clayton County, where he was a standout athlete. He played on the school’s 1987 state championship football team and became the starting quarterback his senior year. His athletic career continued at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he played quarterback for two seasons before graduating in 1993.

After college, Ellis served in the Marine Corps for 22 years. He leaves behind two sons. In his honor, Morrow High School plans to fly flags at half-staff and add his name to its Notable Alumni Hall of Fame.

The crash also claimed the life of another metro Atlanta native, a crew chief aboard the Blackhawk helicopter. A graduate of Parkview High School, he had been involved in the Marine Corps JROTC program.

The pilot of the American Airlines flight, a Georgia Southern University alum from Savannah, was also among the victims.

Through tracking technology, investigators traced Jackson’s last known location to Atlanta. Officers later discovered a man with multiple gunshot wounds in the 2900 block of Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the victim was Jackson.

Authorities have not disclosed a motive, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Residents Alarmed as Vultures Swarm DeKalb County Neighborhood

A quiet Lithonia neighborhood is now home to an unsettling sight as vultures circle overhead and roosts on rooftops, cars, and trees. For months, residents have watched in frustration as dozens of the massive birds invade their community.

The flock, which has been growing in size, causes more than just a nuisance. Residents are worried about damage to their property, especially their roofs. The constant noise of pecking and the mess left behind has homeowners scrambling for ways to keep the birds away.

With a landfill and wastewater treatment plant nearby, many wonder if these vultures are attracted to the area for food. Experts believe it’s not just the landfill but the migration patterns that bring the vultures here. As the birds travel south, they find temporary resting spots like the rooftops of this neighborhood.

Despite their federal protection, the damage vultures cause can be significant. From ruining roof shingles to staining cars, homeowners are feeling the impact. Solutions like using laser pointers to scare off the birds have been suggested, and in severe cases, federal assistance can be sought to remove the birds from the area.

Metro Atlanta’s Air Is Getting Cleaner, EPA Report Reveals

The air in metro Atlanta is slightly cleaner than it was a few years ago, with pollution levels showing modest improvement. A new report by the United States Environemntal Protection Agency (EPA) revealed that the air quality in the metro has improved significantly in the past few years.

Fine particle pollution in metro Atlanta dropped by 2.3% from 2021 to 2023 compared to 2014 to 2016, according to an EPA analysis. Athens and Albany saw the most improvement in Georgia, while Valdosta experienced a 7% increase in pollution levels.

Despite these gains, pollution in the region remains a concern, largely driven by the interstate system and surrounding roadways. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) plays a major role in air quality but doesn’t capture the full picture. That means the air could be more polluted than what appears on weather apps.

Decades ago, metro Atlanta’s rapid population growth caused air quality to decline to crisis levels, prompting state officials to overhaul transportation plans and increase monitoring efforts.

Nationally, 62% of metro areas have seen air quality improvements. Experts recommend checking local air quality index (AQI) reports and using common sense—if you smell smoke, it’s best to limit outdoor activity, even if the AQI looks good.

Atlanta Reconsiders Homeless Camp Policies After Taylor’s Tragic Death

Atlanta officials are rethinking how they handle homeless encampments after a man was killed when a bulldozer tore through a tent city ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. holiday events.

Cornelius Taylor, who had been living in the camp near Ebenezer Baptist Church, was crushed inside his tent on Jan. 16. The site, one of Atlanta’s largest homeless encampments, was being cleared in preparation for the holiday’s commemorative service, where dignitaries gather each year.

Taylor’s family is now using his death to push for change. They plan to hold his funeral at Ebenezer on Monday, followed by a procession to City Hall.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens acknowledged the tragedy, calling it a wake-up call for the city to reassess its policies on homelessness. The city council is now considering a temporary moratorium on clearing encampments while reviewing its approach.

The Supreme Court has allowed cities to enforce homeless camping bans, but such actions remain controversial. Rising rents and economic hardships have driven homelessness up 18% nationwide.

City officials said outreach efforts were made before the site was cleared, but the circumstances of Taylor’s death have sparked calls for a more humane approach. His family and supporters hope Atlanta can lead by example in finding better solutions.
