Delta Air Lines is increasing checked baggage fees for domestic and select short-haul international flights as fuel prices rise. The airline last increased its baggage fees in 2024, when the first checked bag went from $30 to $35 and the second from $40 to $45.

Passengers will now pay $45 for a first checked bag and $55 for a second, each up $10, while a third checked bag will cost $200. The new fees apply to flights booked this week and do not affect long-haul international routes.

The increase comes as jet fuel costs rise, one of the airline industry’s largest expenses. Instead of raising base fares, airlines often adjust fees like baggage to offset costs.

The change follows similar increases by United Airlines and JetBlue Airways as the busy summer travel season approaches.

Free checked bag benefits remain unchanged for Medallion members, premium cabin passengers, eligible credit card holders, and active-duty military.

For most travelers, it means paying more to check a bag, adding to the overall cost of travel.
