Walmart is finally adding tap-to-pay to its stores after years of holding out on Apple Pay and other contactless payment options.

Starting August 24, select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations will begin accepting Apple Pay, Google Pay and contactless credit and debit cards. Walmart says the option will become available at all of its U.S. stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026.

For years, customers who wanted to pay with their phones had to use Walmart Pay, which works by scanning a QR code at checkout through the Walmart app. Walmart Pay will remain available after tap-to-pay launches.

Sam’s Club members will still have access to Scan & Go, which lets shoppers scan and pay for items through the Sam’s Club app without going through a checkout line.

Walmart has not announced which stores will receive tap-to-pay first. The company also plans to expand the payment option to Walmart and Sam’s Club fuel stations by mid-2027.
