A 29-year-old mother has been charged after her 1-year-old son died Wednesday after being left inside a vehicle at Northside Gwinnett Hospital in Lawrenceville.
Police said Deja Coleman dropped off her two older children, ages 6 and 4, at daycare Wednesday morning but forgot to take her 1-year-old son inside before going to work at Northside Gwinnett Hospital around 6:50 a.m.
Around 3:50 p.m., another hospital employee found the child unresponsive in the vehicle and called 911. Officers responded and attempted life-saving measures, but the child died at the scene.
Investigators said Coleman told detectives she forgot her son was still in the back seat.
Police said the temperature inside the vehicle reached 117 degrees about an hour after the child was removed.
Coleman was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children. She was booked into the Gwinnett County Jail, and bond has not been set.
Police said her two older children are now in their father’s custody.
The investigation is ongoing.
