Waymo is recalling nearly 3,800 robotaxis after some of its self driving vehicles drove into flooded roads during severe weather in Texas, according to federal safety documents.

The recall follows an April incident in San Antonio where a Waymo vehicle entered a flooded street and was swept into a creek during heavy rain. No injuries were reported, and nobody was inside the vehicle at the time.

The issue involves software that could slow down near standing water but still continue driving into flooded roads instead of avoiding them completely.

The company said it has already started rolling out software updates, added new safeguards, and restricted service in some flood prone areas. Service in San Antonio was also temporarily paused after the incident.

The recall affects thousands of Waymo vehicles operating in several cities, including Atlanta.
